OSCAR MARTINEZ

Oscar Martinez began his training at the age of 15 with one of his closest friends, Edgar Fiero. Edgar was a fighter who trained under Kru Puk and Sakson Janjirra. Edgar would later become a Muay Thai heavyweight champion. The two would meet at Sun Valley Park where they would hit the speed bad and work Thai pads. Sparking an interest Oscar also participated in boxing at the local recreation center to keep himself out of trouble.

Later, he moved up to Oregon and began training at the Hard Knox Gym. There he met Mike Walwrath, a Muay Thai instructor under Chai Surisuite. It was there that Oscar refined his Muay Thai skills. At this time, he was exposed to other forms of Martial Arts such as Shoot Fighting, Pancrease, Jui-Jitsu, and Kali, but his love for Thai Boxing was unending.

After three years in Oregon, Oscar returned to California and began training under the watchful eye of Kru Puk, Sakson Janjirra, Coban the Great, Knockweed and Pong at the Muay Thai Academy of America. These trainers are all Thai fighters and the school was the first Muay Thai School to open in the United States. Each of the trainers had their own specialty and helped Oscar to perfect his techniques.

Oscar’s first fights and most successful wins included six consecutive and dominant victories. His first official amateur fight was at the Aladdin in Las Vegas. Seven years later he moved to Colorado where he found Champion Marital Arts. There he met a young Duane “BANG” Ludwig and Brad Gumm.

Upon his first visit to the gym he was asked to spar with Duane. Afterward his trainer told him he had never seen anyone give Duane such a match. Oscar was asked to represent Champion Martial Arts in their Lone Wolf Tournaments and holds their Lone Wolf Muay Thai 170lb Championship belt. Oscar eventually began teaching his style of Muay Thai Kickboxing there. During this time he met Tom Yoshida, a Japanese Kickboxing Coach who taught him how to relax and enjoy each fight

In his career, Oscar has helped train a number of Muay Thai and MMA fighters. Some of these include Duane “BANG” Ludwig, Brad Gumm and Bas Rutten during his visit to Colorado in preparation for one of his UFC fights. After a long break from fighting, Oscar was asked to compete against a strong and willful fighter, Don Lee. Oscar defeated Don Lee in a unanimous decision and won the Kickdown Classic Welterweight Championship Belt. Oscar is a certified instructor through the Muay Thai Academy of America and is a licensed corner man for both professional and amateur fighters throughout the state of Colorado.; he has been teaching for 9 years and is the founder of Muay Thai of Colorado.
